Don't Buy This Console for GTA 6

Between now and 19 November, a lot of people in Pakistan are going to buy a console specifically to play GTA 6. Some of them are going to buy the wrong one.

This is a short article with one job: making sure you are not one of them.

GTA 6 runs on exactly three consoles

PlayStation 5 — every model. Slim, Digital, Disc, Pro, and the original launch console.

Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S — both, including the digital-only versions.

That is the complete list. There is nothing else. Not at launch, and Rockstar has announced nothing beyond it.

What will not run it

PlayStation 4, in any form. Not the PS4 Fat, not the Slim, not the PS4 Pro. GTA 6 is not being released for PS4 — it is not a case of running badly, it simply does not exist for that hardware. Rockstar shipped GTA V across three console generations, which is why people assume the same will happen here. It is not happening. GTA 6 was built for current-generation hardware from the start.

Xbox One, in any form. One, One S, One X. Same story.

Anything older. Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 — obviously, but they are on the market and they are cheap, and "cheap console for my kid who wants GTA 6" is a conversation that is going to happen in a lot of shops this year.

Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. No announcement, and nothing in Rockstar's history suggests one.

The listings that will tempt you

These are real, live on Harib today, at genuinely fair prices for what they are — and none of them will play GTA 6:

None of these are bad buys. A PS4 Pro at Rs 90,000 with a library of games is a perfectly good way to play hundreds of excellent titles, and a PS2 at Rs 9,000 is a lovely thing to own. Just do not buy any of them expecting GTA 6 in November, because you will be disappointed and you will have spent real money.

Look at that PS4 Pro price for a second, though. Rs 90,000 — the exact same price as a used Xbox Series S that does run GTA 6. That is the trap in a single line.

A specific warning about jailbroken consoles

Modified or jailbroken PS4s are common in Pakistan and openly advertised, usually bundled with a hard drive full of games. For older titles, people know what they are buying.

But be clear about the limits, because they matter here:

• A jailbreak cannot add GTA 6. It runs games built for the PS4. GTA 6 is not built for the PS4. No amount of modification changes that.
• Jailbroken consoles are usually locked out of online play. Sony bans them from PSN, which means no online features and no official store.
• They cannot be updated past a specific firmware version without losing the jailbreak.

If someone tells you a modified PS4 will run GTA 6 when it comes out, they are either mistaken or lying to close a sale. Walk away.

The one that is easy to miss

The PS5 Digital Edition plays GTA 6 perfectly well — and for this game, its missing disc drive costs you nothing. GTA 6 has no disc at all. Rockstar confirmed the "physical" edition is a box containing a download code, so boxed and digital buyers install exactly the same way.

What still matters is price. The PS5 Slim Digital is Rs 240,000 while a used PS5 Slim with a disc drive is Rs 185,000 — cheaper, and the drive is still useful for the rest of the PS5 library and Pakistan's used-game market. Before you pay for any used console

Whatever you buy, check these:

1. Turn it on in front of the seller. Non-negotiable, always.
2. Check the model number on the box or the sticker underneath — not the seller's description. "PS5" on an ad has meant a PS4 more than once.
3. Listen to the fan under load. Loud grinding on a used PS5 usually means dust or worse.
4. Test both HDMI and every USB port.
5. Confirm it is not account-locked to the seller, and that it has been factory reset.
6. Check the disc drive by playing an actual disc, if it has one.

If you already own a PS4 or Xbox One

You are not stuck — but you should act sooner rather than later.

Last-generation consoles hold their value best in the months before a big launch, while people are still shopping around, and they drop once everyone has upgraded. If you are planning to move to a PS5 or Series X for GTA 6, selling the old one now will fund more of the new one than selling it in December will.
